Attila (circa 406–453 AD) was one of the most famous military leaders and rulers of the Huns, playing a key role in the history of Europe in the 5th century. His name still evokes fear and admiration, becoming a symbol of destructive power and military genius.
Attila was born into the Hunnic tribe, which at that time had settled in what is now Central Asia and Eastern Europe. In 452, Attila directed his forces into Italy. He captured Ravenna and other major cities, leaving destruction and devastation in his wake. According to legend, Pope Leo I managed to persuade Attila to retreat, although the exact reasons for his withdrawal are still debated.
Attila died in 453 on the night after his wedding to a German princess. His death led to the disintegration of the Hunnic state, as his sons were unable to maintain power. Attila became a symbol of barbarism for the Romans, but for some peoples, he remained a hero.
