The separation of Panama from Colombia in 1903 was an important event in the history of Latin America. This process not only marked Panama's desire for independence but also became a key moment in the geopolitical strategy of the United States, which was seeking ways to construct the Panama Canal.
After gaining independence from Spain in 1821, Panama joined Gran Colombia, which included present-day Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. However, the political and economic instability within this union, as well as the centralization of power in Bogotá, led to dissatisfaction among Panamanians. The Panama region, being on the periphery of the political life of New Granada (later Colombia), faced neglect of its needs and interests.
The economy of Panama at this time was largely agrarian, focused on agriculture, but also showed dependence on foreign trade. The country's strategic location, which could be used for transporting goods between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, went unnoticed. With the emergence of the idea of constructing the Panama Canal, interest in Panama increased, but its central authority in Bogotá did not show sufficient interest in developing the region.
From the beginning of the 20th century, the United States actively worked on building the canal through Panama, recognizing its strategic importance for trade and military operations. The Buchanan Treaty of 1846 already defined the terms of American control over the canal, but real progress only began in the early 1900s.
The situation in Colombia at that time was unstable, and Panama saw an opportunity for separation with the support of the U.S. The American administration, interested in building the canal, conducted secret negotiations with local leaders in Panama, offering them support in exchange for independence.
In early November 1903, after the failure of negotiations between the Colombian government and the U.S. regarding the construction of the canal, local patriots in Panama decided to take action. On November 3, 1903, Panama declared its independence from Colombia. This event was met with support from the U.S., which immediately sent its ships into Panamanian waters to protect the new government.
Panamanian patriots such as Esteban Jiménez played a key role in organizing the uprising. The success of the separation was also ensured by the fact that Colombian troops were unable to take decisive actions against the rebels.
As a result of the separation, on November 18, 1903, Panama and the U.S. signed the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty, which granted the U.S. control over the Canal Zone. This agreement caused dissatisfaction among the Colombian government, which viewed the separation as treachery.
The independence of Panama opened a new era for the country. Construction of the Panama Canal began in 1904 and was completed in 1914, leading to significant economic growth and development in Panama.
